For most people the idea of English wine is a bit absurd. Beer, yes, cider, yes, even whiskey, but wine? Well for a while now England has been producing quality sparkling wines. It is not as strange as one may think. Southern England is at a similar latitude to Champagne in France and chalky soils that are an important aspect of Champagne are abundant in southern England. Today we tasted two sparkling wines made by Black Chalk in the Hampshire Valley. Their Classic 2020 made from 39% Chardonnay, 36% Pinot Meunier, and 25% Pinot Noir was a very good, elegant and stylish bubbly with a nice balance of fruit and acidity. The Wild Rose 2020 was even better. Made from 42% Pinot Meunier, 41% Pinot Noir, and 17% Chardonnay it was very light in color but very full of flavors with considerable complexity. Now Available.
